Rock out at Soundwave 2014, back for another amazing day in Adelaide See fantastic flora in bloom at the Como Gardens Open Day

If you're wondering what to do in Melbourne with your family this month, the Como Gardens Open Day is definitely worth adding into your itinerary. Even if you're not a full-blown plant enthusiast, there will be plenty to enjoy when these historic and beautiful gardens come alive to the public for one special weekend.

From April 12-13 this year, the lush gardens will play host to a variety of activities perfect for the whole family. There are only two open day events held every year, so make sure you're in Melbourne to catch this rare opportunity.

The Como Gardens were established by one of the country's most wealthy pioneer families. The entire estate includes a carefully restored historic mansion (called Como House) complete with antique furniture, and the surrounding gardens are always kept in top condition.

Magnolia and Prunus plant collections take centre stage in the gardens. Both have been registered with the Garden Plant Conservation Association of Australia, which focuses on maintaining plant diversity Down Under.

Wander through the sweet-smelling rows of over 55 magnolia plants, or take a moment to admire the verdant grounds rich in shrubbery and towering trees. Look out for such standouts as the American Tulip Tree and the 'Dove' or 'Ghost' tree - so named for the cream-coloured leaves that look like small flocks of doves fluttering in the wind.

There's also a vintage car museum to explore, aviaries filled with pheasants, peacocks and turkeys as well as plenty of food and drink to enjoy on the expansive lawns. A teddy bear's picnic is also planned, so your kids can join in on the fun.

Settle into your holiday accommodation early so you can make your way to the gardens with ease. Mantra on Jolimont is perfectly placed in Melbourne's sport and cultural hub, so there's no shortage of activities to explore during your Victorian getaway.
