Canberra with the kids

Take the Kids to Questacon Canberra with the kids

Picking a place to go with the kids isn't always as easy as it is when you only have adults to please.

Picking a place to go with the kids isn't always as easy as it is when you only have adults to please.

Suddenly it's not about finding a spot with the best cocktail bars, but one that has plenty of family-friendly activities that won't bore the young ones or the grown-ups either.

Plan some time away in Canberra to keep those bored cries at bay and take a well-deserved break for yourself with the kids at the same time.

Canberra's CBD is a great place to explore from Mantra on Northbourne, but there are plenty of other activities to do around the city as well.

Dinosaur Museum

No child seems to be exempt from the allure of the dinosaur. There's something about those massive skeletons looming overhead that is innately fascinating - even if they aren't yet old enough to fully understand what it is they're looking at!

Naturally, one of the biggest benefits of heading here as a family is that while they love the giant beasts, you get to marvel at the history of the world and some of the work being done by archaeologists around the globe. Both the young and old(er) will be able to learn something from this experience.

Dinosaurs will meet you at the gate of Gold Creek Village for some tempting photo opportunities, then you'll be able to enter into the wild that is the dinosaur museum, which is open 10am to 5pm every day.

On your way out, don't forget your official dinosaur hunting licence - and one for the kids too.

3infun

No family holiday in Canberra would be complete without a ticket to the 3infun attractions.

It really is what it sounds like - so long as what you think it sounds like is three different attractions with one ticket.

This is an affordable and easy way to get around several of Canberra's best spots with just the one ticket, which as you know, means two less queues to wait in while keeping the kids calm.

Plus, you won't even have to wait in line for this multi-ticket, as you can book in advance online.

With this pass, you'll get into the Australian Institute of Sport, the Cockington Green Gardens and Questacon - The National Science and Technology Centre.

The institute of sport will let you get up close and personal with some of Australia's best athletes (or the model versions of them, at least), the gardens will offer you entry to a miniature world, and the technology centre will keep everyone busy looking at the 200 or so exhibits.

Buying one of these tickets saves you around 15 per cent off the usual price.

Weston Park

Since Canberra is such a stunning place - even on a not-so-good day - you might hopefully come across some sunshine that will allow you to spend an afternoon at Weston Park.

This popular spot is ideal for a swim on the eastern shore, a bike ride through the park on the cycle track, or simply to let the kids run wild on the playground and tree house - not to mention the miniature train.

If you want to make a day of it, bring along some barbeque supplies as there are facilities on site for a cook up. Don't forget to pack a picnic and some park-type toys for a full day in the fresh air!
