Hungry for a burger? Try these 4 Queenstown restaurants

Queenstown's best burgers

Queenstown, New Zealand is renowned for its many adventure activities. However, between trying as many out as you can and finally calling it a night at your holiday accommodation, you're going to get pretty hungry.

There are few foods as hunger-busting as a good burger, so make sure you grab one at some of these famous Queenstown restaurants.

Fergburger

Google 'Queenstown burger' and Fergburger will almost undoubtedly hit the top of the list. There are probably few restaurants in the town more famous than this, and with very good reason.

The restaurant has been open since 2001, and currently resides on Shotover Street. Why did it start? According to the joint's website:

"As there was virtually nothing else to eat back in those days, drunk people had begun eating their own clothes and also scraps of firewood by the side of the road." (they like a bit of humour at Fergburger).

Nowadays the restaurant enjoys a 21-hour rush, with hungry tourists and locals alike more than happy to wait any length of time to enjoy one of its famous meals. The US's CNN website even claimed, "New Zealand's Fergburger may be the best burger joint on the planet."

Devil Burger

Nestled away on Church Street, just next to the car park behind Reading Cinema, is the devilish little Devil Burger.

Devil Burger is a bit of an unsung hero thanks to Ferg's international popularity. That doesn't make it any less delicious, however. In fact, one TripAdvisor reviewer recently said:

"I had this instead of going to Fergburger! And this was by far the best choice I have made in a while!"

Here you can find a diverse range of devil-themed dishes. For example, does a She Devil sound to your liking? That's prime beef, egg, caramelised onion and Devil relish. Or perhaps you're more of a Devil's Buttered Chicken? With chicken tenderloins lavished in a mild butter chicken sauce, served with delicious, crispy bacon.

Joe's Garage

Joe's Garage is famous around New Zealand for being a friendly, high-quality American-style restaurant. Did you know the chain actually started in Queenstown?

Though it opened in an old post shop in 2000, Joe's is now located on Searle Lane - just up from the waterfront, running parallel to the Queenstown Mall. From 7am until 4pm every day of the week you can grab a table and a coffee,f and check out the great range of burgers.

The beef, chicken or lamb burger is to die for if you are a meat eater, but vegetarians shouldn't despair. Instead, order the mushroom burger - featuring grilled portobello mushrooms and caramelised onion - and enjoy!

Winnie's

Though typically known as a pizzeria, your trip to Queenstown isn't complete without experiencing Winnie's Gourmet Pizza Restaurant and Bar. You don't have to feel like Italian food to enjoy this iconic culinary destination, as the menu features a healthy dose of burgers as well.

The stairs leading up to Winnie's are located right next to Reading Cinemas in the Mall, taking you into a fascinating wooden world with paintings on the walls and a real Kiwi charm. What'll really impress you about this place (other than the great food, of course), is the fact that the roof can open. That's right, on a clear evening you could be looking at the stars from the comfort of your table, a refreshing pint and delicious burger in hand. There might even be a sports game on the big TV!

Where to stay

If you need accommodation, make sure you investigate Mantra's options located here in Queenstown. Between Queenstown Airport and the town itself lies Mantra Marina. No matter how large a group you bring with you, the range of comfortable room options here - from hotel rooms to three-bedroom deluxe lakefront apartments - will no doubt satisfy.

Alternatively, you could also check out BreakFree The Waterfront, located just adjacent to the town centre on Beach Street. This hotel has spectacular views of Lake Wakatipu, and is within easy walking distance of the Mall.
