2 must-see plays in Hobart this April

Hobart plays to see this April

Television can shock us and engross us from home. Movies can surprise, amaze and astound us when we see them on the big screen. However, there are few experiences quite like watching a live theatrical performance, particularly in a grand, historic theatre building.

For these reasons, why not see one of these fantastic plays during your trip to Hobart this April?

100 Reasons for War

With ANZAC Day just around the corner, there is perhaps no better a time than now to go and see a performance touching on that very subject.

100 Reasons for War was penned by one of Australia's most beloved playwrights, Tom Holloway. Previous award-winning works of Mr Holloway's include Beyond the Neck, a production he wrote in 2007, and Red Sky Morning from 2008.

His latest story has been produced by renowned theatre company Blue Cow, and will be premiering in Hobart's Theatre Royal on April 23, running until April 25.

Though the title might immediately conjure up images of uniform-wearing, dirt-covered soldiers cowering in a trench as a narrator warbles on about the pointlessness of war, you'll find that 100 Reasons for War is actually a humorous, optimistic story that caps off a century of human conflict - coinciding with the ANZAC centenary.

If features tales from pubs, boardrooms, classrooms and kitchens, and covers subjects ranging from Bill Clinton and class division to social media and chimpanzees.

Kelly

From April 30 to May 2, the Queensland Theatre Company brings you the story of one of Australia's most infamous inmates: Ned Kelly.

After a very successful run in Brisbane, leading to a four-and-a-half-star review from the Brisbane Times, Kelly comes to Hobart's Theatre Royal to bring a dark, but yet humorous, story of Ned and his brother Dan.

"There are few experiences quite like watching a live theatrical performance, particularly in a grand, historic theatre building."

You see, Ned (played by award-winning actor Steven Rooke) is about to hang for his crimes and he faces his final night in prison. However, Dan, disguised as a priest, shows up to beg for his forgiveness, so that he can move north to Queensland and forget all about his past. That doesn't sound so bad, until you find out Dan tried to kill Ned during their last encounter.

"Steven Rooke as the bleary-eyed and weary Ned Kelly is mesmerising, giving flesh to this intimidating role in a manner that - almost casually - nails darkly funny, furious and cynical in one fell swoop," said Brisbane Times reviewer Sommer Tothill.

Along with the play itself, you can even attend an evening with the Queensland Theatre Company itself, learning about the actor's take on this contemporary iteration of one of Australia's legends. This will be held at Fullers Bookshop on April 29.

Important Hobart information

Both of these fantastic theatrical events will be held at Hobart's amazing Theatre Royal, located on Campbell Street in the CBD. This building is one of the must-visit locations of the Tasmanian capital, as it has been a piece of the city since 1837.

Getting there is a breeze if you book your Hobart holiday accommodation in the CBD itself.

For example, Mantra Collins Hotel is practically next door, barely a two-minute walk away. Browse through the room options here to choose views of the CBD, Mount Wellington or Queen's Domain and botanical gardens.

Alternatively, near the Military Museum, Saint David's Park and the waterfront is also Mantra One Sandy Bay Road. This sophisticated building was built in 1926, and still retains that classic charm, though with plenty of modern amenities thrown in for good measure. The rooms are both spacious and comfortable - perfect for relaxing in between your many Hobart adventures.
