Renowned artist James Turrell to debut exhibit at NGA

James Turrell exhibit debut

Over the past 50 years, American artist James Turrell has captivated audiences with his talent of showing the relationship between light, space, perception and dimension. This heavily physical approach to art, which designates Turrell as an artist who has always been ahead of his time, has been well-received by global audiences since 1974, when Turrell began his famous work on the Roden Crater.

If you're a fan of Turrell's work, you won't want to miss the National Gallery's upcoming exhibit, which will showcase some of the artist's most well-known pieces.

50 years of groundbreaking art

Starting on 13 December, the NGA will exhibit some of the pieces that have marked Turrell's 50-year career. The US-born talent first came onto the scene in the 1960s, working as an artist in Southern California. His early worked focused on blending interior and exterior spaces.

It wasn't until 1974 that Turrell's most famous work, his ongoing project at the Roden Crater, a breathtaking extinct volcano in the US state of Arizona. The focus of the project is on the merging of the sky and the earth, and the physical realities that result from this visually stunning marriage.

In summarising his artistic approach, Turrell explains that light is the most central component of his work.

"My work has no object, no image and no focus," he says, according to his website. "With no object, no image and no focus, what are you looking at? You are looking at you looking. What is important to me is to create an experience of wordless thought."

'Agua de Luz' is another example of Turrell's unique style. The sky, pools, and other interesting manifestations of light are deconstructed in this set of images.

"If you're a fan of Turrell's work, you won't want to miss the National Gallery's upcoming exhibit, which will showcase some of the artist's most well-known pieces."

'James Turrell: a retrospective' exhibit coming to NGA

The upcoming NGA event will run from December to June, and will be Turrell's first exhibit Down Under. The display will include built spaces, prints, photographs, holograms and drawings, some of the artist's preferred mediums. Images from 'Skyspaces' and the Roden Crater will be showcased at the exhibit, inviting audiences to view classic Turrell works.

The show has already been well-received on an international scale. Previously on display at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Guggenheim in New York, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, the exhibit has drawn huge crowds. In fact, according to the Sydney Morning Herald, the event sold out in Los Angeles and broke the record for the highest turnout ever at the Guggenheim.

Tickets for the event have been on sale since October, so if you're hoping to scoop some up, now's the time to do it. Plan your trip to Canberra around this highly anticipated exhibition of the works of one of the 20th and 21st centuries' most influential contemporary artists.
