Roundup: Top 5 music festivals in Australia this summer

Top 5 Music Festivals in Australia

Get your favourite outfit out of the closet, free up space on your arms for friendship bracelets and venue passes and brace yourself for the biggest and best summer of festivals Australia has ever seen. Not sure which concerts to spend your precious pennies on? Never fear, we've taken care of the hard yards and sniffed out the best of the best. Here's a sneak peek at the top five musical festivals across the nation this summer.

The Falls Festival

The Falls Music and Arts Festival is set to be an absolute cracker this December. Held at three locations across the country - Lorne, Marion Falls and Byron - it features an incredible lineup of musicians, artists, comedians and more. Pull out your dancing shoes and get ready to see the likes of Robyn, Alt-J, the Black Lips, Jamie XX, John Butler Trio, Run the Jewels, SBTRKT and Vance Joy in the flesh.

Whet your appetite with this preview to the massive festival, held over the New Year period in breathtakingly beautiful bush locations. Each of the three venues is close to the beach alongside plenty of greenery. You can't help but fall in love the Falls Festival.

Sugar Mountain

Held in Melbourne on Saturday 24 January, Sugar Mountain is a festival of contemporary music, new media and visual art. It's held at the Victorian College of Arts and is spread across three outdoor and two indoor stages.

There's a strong emphasis on creativity here, as witnessed in the impressive lineup of musicians and artists. See Nas perform Illmatic, dance to ODESZA and check out artists such as Ash Keating, Nonotak and Confetti System.

The event is set to be a whirlwind of the new, fresh and unusual, so pack your creative spirit and head along to this one day event.

Stereosonic

Electronic dance music enthusiasts unite for Stereosonic. Five Australian capitals (Sydney, Adelaide, Perth, Melbourne and Brisbane) host this two-day event around the end of November and start of December, and it's eagerly anticipated each year. It coincides with the end of exams and the start of summer, meaning revellers are always out in full force. Do your bit to support a good cause when you attend Stereosonic, with the festival supporting the world's biggest AIDS charity, RED.

This year's lineup is positively massive and includes the likes of Skrillex, Diplo, Duke Dumont, Peking Duck and many more. Artists vary across the different venues, so those passionate EDM fans could attend them all to ensure they don't miss out!

St Jerome's Laneway Festival

Hipsters come together at Laneway, which sweeps the country in early 2015. Head to Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne or Fremantle in January and February for your slice of the action, which promises to present you with fresh music that is ahead of the curve.

Held in unique locations with smaller crowds than at your standard international music events, this is a truly intimate experience that gives you the chance to see some of the next big things - or at least make you feel like one of the cool kids for the day.

Check out scene stealers such as Banks, Caribou, FKA Twigs, Flying Lotus, Future Islands, Jungle, Little Dragon, Lykke Li and St. Vincent, and get a glimpse of what previous festivals have held with this clip.

Soundwave

If you like your music on the heavier side, Soundwave is the event for you. The 2015 lineup includes massive acts like Faith No More, Lamb of God, Slipknot, Slash, Marilyn Manson, Fall Out Boy, Incubus, Soundgarden and plenty of other rock acts. While we'd normally recommend getting your leathers on for this head banging festival, the sweltering weather during the event suggests otherwise!

Adelaide, Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane will all be getting a slice of the action, which is spread across two days in February (for Adelaide and Melbourne) and March (Sydney and Brisbane).
