5 fresh reasons to visit Broome this year

See the show, the Suit, in Adelaide this October.

Broome has long been one of Western Australia's most attractive destinations for travellers and holidaymakers, thanks largely to its impressive natural landscapes and wildlife features. It's the western gateway to Kimberley and boasts brilliant beaches and stunning weather, so what are you waiting for? If you're still unconvinced, take a look at the following five reasons to make the journey to beautiful Broome.

1. It's Western Australia's top tourism town

Broome is officially the top tourism town or region in Western Australia, scooping this year's prestigious 2014 GWN7 Top Tourism Award. Despite tough competition from Denmark and Margaret River, Broome came out on top thanks to its outstanding efforts in the tourism industry.

The awards are designed to recognise an area's effort to attract and welcome visitors, along with reflecting the community effort required to develop high quality (and not high cost) tourism.

2. The accommodation is exceptional

Mantra Frangipani Broome provides ideal holiday accommodation for travellers to the region. It's located within walking distance to the famous Cable Beach and is a 10 minute drive away from the town centre, with plenty of cafes and restaurants scattered along the way.

The architecturally- designed building is contemporary and comfortable, designed to allow guests the ultimate in peace and privacy. Select from one, two and three bedroom options and enjoy indoor and outdoor dining areas in your apartment. Another huge draw card is the facility's private outdoor shower, allowing you to well and truly relax in this tropical oasis. If you're a water baby, Mantra Frangipani's two designer swimming pools - one of which has its own waterfall - will further entice you.

3. You can soak up history at the Japanese Cemetery

Broome is home to the country's largest Japanese cemetery, dating back to early pearling days and representing the ties Japan and Broome had the early 1900s. The sombre site has 707 graves for 919 people, many of whom were young Japanese divers who met their fate due to the bends or drowning. Look out for the cemetery's large stone obelisk which remembers people who lost their lives in a 1908 cyclone. In 1914 alone 33 men died of the bends (diver's paralysis), and their graves, complete with coloured beach rock headstones, can be found at the Japanese Cemetery.

4. It's got dinosaur footprints

Head to Gantheaume Point, just a 10 minute drive away from Broome, to see dinosaur footprints preserved in the reef rocks of the beach, revealed when the tide is low. The beach itself is incredibly impressive, with bright turquoise water set against a red rock cliff, and its interpretive signs add to the appeal. They describe the area's history, though if you want to hunt out the dinosaur footprints it's best to visit the Broome Visitor Centre for tips and advice. Lifeguards don't patrol the beach here, and you've got to watch out for Broome's significant tidal measures, but it's well worth the trip to see them.

5. You can ride a hovercraft

Transport yourself right to the set of Back to the Future and ride a hovercraft when you're in Broome. Head to Port Drive to hop aboard this boat, which will see you hovering over low water, sand bars and tidal flats to get to places you'd never be able to get to otherwise. You'll float along the Broome town coastline and over to Roebuck Bay all while learning some interesting history tidbits along the way. This is a great option for those keen to check out the dinosaur footprints listed above.
