There's never any shortage of things to do in Wollongong, with its beautiful beaches, rock pools, bushwalking trails and slice of city life. It's particularly well worth heading to the coastal gem this November, when the Viva la Gong festival is set to take the town by storm.

This event is presented by the Wollongong City Council and celebrates the arts, cultural diversity, the Wollongong community and waste awareness. This year, it's taking place on Saturday November 8 at MacCabe Park from 11 a.m. until 8.30 p.m. and it's a great excuse to get a group of family and friends together.

What can you expect from this event? First of all, get ready to experience a range of tasty flavours influenced by all of Wollongong's diverse inhabitants. From Aussie bush tucker to Asian fusion and cuisine inspired by the Pacific Islands, there will be a little bit of everything. The park will also be lively with music and dancers, so you can bop along to a range of performances. What's more, there will also be some inspiring circus acts as well as artisan stalls selling hand-made crafts, sweet treats and and other treasures.

If you're in the mood to relax or watch a movie, you can head to the screening area to watch various films, animations and slideshows from the community.

MacCabe Park is easy to get to, just a short walk from the heart of the CBD.

Wollongong's attractions

When you're not enjoying the Viva la Gong festival, you can make most of the city's other attractions. Make your way to the public ocean rock pools peppered along the coast. These are incredibly family-friendly, as you don't have to worry about the dangers of ocean currents or waves. Try the North Wollongong pools along Cliff road, or the Coledale pools and Lawrence Hargrave Drive.
