Long weekends are the perfect time to get creative in the kitchen with the kids. After all, you will need to fill the days with fun activities and cooking is something that everybody can enjoy.

No matter what your child's age or experience, there will be something they can contribute when you're making a meal.

If you're travelling over this break, you'll likely want to try a few restaurants and cafes, but when you've exhausted the menus there's nothing quite like a home cooked meal to bring the family together.

"Long weekends are the perfect time to get creative in the kitchen with the kids. After all, you will need to fill the days with fun activities and cooking is something that everybody can enjoy."

Here is a recipe for you to try out during the holidays - with a special chocolate twist. Don't feel guilty about indulging - it is the holidays after all!

Chocolate chip pancakes

Delight that  sweet tooth with a breakfast adults and kids alike will love. Pancakes are easy to make, tasty and a great way to treat yourself during the holidays.

So what do you need for a batch of delicious pancakes? Here are the ingredients required to feed 4, but you may find you need to adjust this depending on how many hungry mouths you have to feed!

- 1 egg
- 1 cup flour
- 1 cup milk
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- A pinch of salt
- 1 cup of cooking chocolate chips
- 2 tablespoons butter
- Butter or oil for greasing the pan

The great thing about this recipe is its components are basic and easy to find at the local corner store or supermarket. There are even ways to substitute the ingredients to cater for any special dietary requirements such as gluten-free or vegan.

In addition to this, there are plenty of opportunities for the kids to get involved in making this meal. Let them lend a hand in cooking the pancakes with these steps.

1) Sift the flour and mix together with the sugar and salt.

2) In another bowl, whisk together the egg, softened butter and milk.

3) Combine the wet and dry ingredients together and mix until smooth. Then pour in the chocolate chips and mix until evenly distributed. The kids will love giving the mixture a stir - and bonus points if you let them lick the bowl at the end!

4) Heat up the pan, grease it with oil or batter and pour in a tablespoon full of pancake mix, depending on what size you want the pancakes to be. Kids are likely to want them big! Flip with a spatula and cook until lightly golden on each side.

6) Serve up your delectable chocolate chip pancakes with some sides of your choosing, from maple syrup to a decadent chocolate sauce. You can also chop up some fresh seasonal fruit to serve alongside your sweet treat, great for making this meal a bit more nutritious.

Finally, pair up your pancakes with a hot mug of coffee for the adults and a cup of hot chocolate for the kids, and enjoy your delicious and extra special breakfast.

If you are heading away this long weekend, these tasty chocolate chip pancakes are a great meal to enjoy while travelling. Not only are they a special treat to indulge in during the break, they're easy to make on the road, with simple ingredients and a no-fuss cooking process.

What else? The kids will have fun lending a hand too, and they'll learn a few great cooking tips. In addition to this, having a couple of easy recipes up your sleeve for the holidays can save you the cost or hassle of dining out for every single meal.

Wherever you are in Australia these holidays, you can enjoy this delicious breakfast.
