Top three destinations for weekend getaways in Tropical North Queensland

Visit Tropical North Queensland and take a tour of the Great Barrier Reef

Next time you feel like taking the family on a fun weekend getaway, why not head to somewhere in beautiful Tropical North Queensland (TNQ)?

TNQ is home to some of the most popular holiday destinations in the country. Whether you want to take a tour to the Great Barrier Reef or explore the rainforests, there are activities to keep the whole family entertained.

When it comes to picking somewhere to stay for a weekend getaway, you are spoilt for choice!

Here are our top three destinations in TNQ for weekend escapes:

Cairns

The vibrant city of Cairns is one of TNQ's largest urban areas, so you can be sure to find the place brimming with life and laughter.

One of the highlights of Cairns is the waterfront, otherwise known as the 'Esplanade'. Made up of boardwalks, lush green parks and the famous Cairns Lagoon (a saltwater swimming pool), the Esplanade is a great way to spend a Saturday morning.

Market stalls are open every Saturday from 8am to 4pm, selling everything from handmade jewellery to pottery.

After a stroll along the Esplanade, you might want to find a spot to have a picnic while people-watching and enjoying views of the ocean.

This is a great, affordable way to soak up the city's atmosphere and get acquainted with the area.

Mantra Esplanade is located just a hop, skip and jump from the waterfront and boasts beautiful views of the harbour, mountains and city. This is a great place to stay if you want to be right in the middle of town!

That said, Cairns offers so much more than the waterfront. Base yourself in the city and take a tour out to the Great Barrier Reef or to the nearby Kuranda rainforest.

Many tours leave from Cairns, so if you come here for a weekend getaway the only challenge you'll have is picking what activities you want to fit in!

Tropical North Queensland is an ideal destination to escape, offering a countless number of beautiful places to explore and is close to the dynamic city of Cairns.

Port Douglas

Port Douglas is so popular that sometimes its population doubles during peak season!

However, this lovely seaside town is worth a visit at any time of year. It is well-known for its trendy cafes, restaurants and vibrant nightlife, as well as its beautiful beaches.

You'll find Port Douglas heaven if you are a water baby. Four Mile Beach is a great place to go swimming, kayaking or even try your hand at paddleboarding.

One of the many resorts in Port Douglas, Mantra Heritage is located right in the heart of the town, close to the water. Enjoy waking up knowing that the beach is just a few steps away!

Foodies will also love the range of cafes that line the town's centre. Start your day with a deliciously brewed hot coffee and sample one of the many trendy food spots for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Like Cairns, Port Douglas is located close to the Great Barrier Reef and near some of TNQ's beautiful rainforests.

Be sure to take advantage of this and spend a day exploring the town's surrounding areas!

Palm Cove

As the name suggests, Palm Cove was named after the palm trees that line its main beach. Heading here for a weekend getaway will feel like escaping to a tropical island!

We'd suggest adopting "island time" while you are here - relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings, don't feel rushed to fit in a million things at once.

To really take a break from your usual routine, stay at Mantra Amphora, a lovely resort right on Palm Cove beach.

Wake up to amazing views of the ocean and relax and unwind in the on-site pools and spas.

After a weekend in Palm Cove you are sure to come back home feeling relaxed, rejuvenated and ready to take on another working week!
