Get into the festive spirit for the Royal Melbourne Show

The Royal Melbourne Show is about to take the city by storm, coming up on Saturday 20 September and running until Wednesday October 1 at the Melbourne Showgrounds.

At this long running, agriculturally-themed event, which is completely family friendly, you can do everything and anything from visiting the animal nursery and snuggling up with infant lambs to checking out some incredible feats of sheep shearing. Watch these experts break speed records - or perhaps even try giving this classic Australian pastime a go yourself! Be sure to get a photo to take away as a memento of your experience.

This is far from all that's on offer however. The Milking Barn is another family favourite, where young and old alike can try hand milking a cow and learning all about the process of where milk comes from and how it ends up in our fridges. You can even check out how butter and cream is made.

'The Beef Experience' allows you to discover different breeds of cattle and how meat's treated from paddock to plate. If you need a break from all the food-related action, you can pay a visit to the wonderful Art, Craft and Cookery pavilion, which plays host to fun and thrifty delights such as the YorkshireTea Cosy Cafe and competition entries for the 2014 Art, Craft and Cookery Popular Choice Award.

There's also plenty of live entertainment for the whole family, with the 'Disney Rockin' the House with Mickey Mouse' show performed daily at the Herald Sun Entertainment Centre a favourite for children.

The live musical lineup is also awesome, with a performance from X Factor contestants scheduled for Thursday September 25 - and there's even a meet and greet for any eager fans who want a photograph.

When it comes to staying fed and watered, there are all sorts of great tastes around to keep you satisfied. The Tastes of Victoria Pavilion showcases seasonal produce from local producers, while the Royal Melbourne Fine Food Deli has some truly mouthwatering gourmet offerings.

Then there's the Burch & Purchese Dessert Bar, the Brew Bar & BBQ and the Victorian Vine and Dine Garden for you to enjoy.

Not to mention, you can also pay a visit to the MasterChef Kitchen and experience some behind-the-scenes insight into the show.

There are a number of different admission options for this festival. A general admission one-day adult ticket costs around $36, with children $18. However, there are two types of family passes available. One is Family A, designed for two adults and two children at $82, while the Family B pass is designed for one adult and three children and costs $68.
