Celebrate Australian Dance Week in Perth this May

Australian Dance Week's Everybody Dance Now, Perth

Dancing is a great way not only to move about and do some physical exercise, but to compete, have fun, challenge your body, celebrate a happy time or just go wild at a dance party. The many different styles of dance in existence are as eclectic and interesting as the dancers themselves, with something available for anyone - any age.

Australian Dance Week is coming up this May, which the city of Perth will be celebrating in full. To join in, make sure you travel to Perth and check out these free activities.

Australian Dance Week's Everybody Dance Now, Perth

Following International Dance Day on April 29, Australian Dance Week is a nation-wide celebration of dance, with each capital showcasing its own range of activities for keen enthusiasts and amateurs alike to participate in or enjoy watching.

In Perth, Everybody Dance Now runs from May 3-8, and is brought to you with support from mental health campaign Act-Belong-Commit (ABC) and Ausdance WA - a dance organisation with affiliates all across the country.

There are three events taking place in the Perth CBD for this exciting week, which also make up a part of an ongoing dance campaign known as the Act-Belong-Commit Dance 100.

Act-Belong-Commit DANCE LIVE 2015

During your stay in Perth, make sure you head to the heart of the CBD - Forrester Place - on May 3 to witness the spectacle that is ABC's DANCE LIVE event. This is the single largest performance showcase in the whole of the Dance 100, and is entirely free to watch.

Starting at 2pm, there will be a flash mob-style event, which soon transitions into a curated on-stage dance performance. You will witness professional companies show off what they can do, accompanied by invited youth groups, local schools, community dance groups and cultural dance groups.

Act-Belong-Commit DANCE FILMS 2015

If you're a lover of both dance and film, DANCE FILMS 2015 is very likely where you should be during Aus Dance Week.

Everyday from 3-5pm, May 4-8, you can pop along to Northbridge Piazza to see a range of locally made short dance films. Overall there will be 20 screening, featuring a mixture of popular, indigenous, contemporary and regional dance performances as a part of each work's subject matter. Bring some chairs or grab a bean bag on the Piazza lawns and enjoy the show!

"Dancing is a fun activity for both young and old. So why not celebrate alongside the city of Perth this coming May?"

To cap off the entire week are the two Trigger events: Screen and Song.

Trigger: Screen takes place on May 5, following the DANCE FILMS screening. It will utilise Northbridge Piazza's large screen and wide open space to create a unique interactive event designed to get you moving. It explores the relationship we all have with movement, encouraging participants to watch, listen and play in response to certain triggers.

Trigger: Song is the final act in this exciting dance week, closing the events on May 8 at Brookfield Place. Similar to its Screen counterpart, Song utilises projections, music and dance performances to get everybody attending moving and jamming out to their favourite trigger song.

What's best, the songs selected are from public submissions to Ausdance WA. You might still have a chance to get your favourite in the mix if you pop to the website and submit before your visit.
