5 fun things to do in Canberra – Couple’s Weekend

You might not typically think of Canberra as a place to go on a weekend couple’s getaway, but the capital of Australia offers a lot more than just politicians and Questacon! From hidden bars, to foodie locations and amazing markets - read on for 5 fun activities to do on a weekend with your significant other in Canberra.

1. The Highball Express – Go back in time with this hidden Cuban bar

As soon as you walk in the doors of The Highball Express you’ll wonder if Canberra has magically become the Caribbean. Named after a flight provider that transported wealthy, thirsty American’s to Cuba during the prohibition, its design is strongly influenced by both aeronautical engineering and old Havana in the 20’s. As for which drink to enjoy, you really can’t go past their classic Pina Colada, or a nip of one of the specialist rums.

2. Lonsdale Street – Foodie spots and boutique shops

To find the heart of Canberra’s foodie scene, you need venture no further than Braddon’s Lonsdale Street. An ever changing, eclectic landscape of multicultural food trucks, pop-up bars, restaurants and trendy, unique boutiques, it is a must visit for the culture, food and fashion lover.

3 & 4. Canberra’s Markets – Fresh produce, delectable treats and vintage galore

Canberra is renowned for its markets, so much so that we’ve included two! Whether it’s treats of the sweet variety you desire, home crafted goods ideal for presents or the freshest of produce, there’s a market for you.
Our first pick is the Capital Region Farmer’s Market held on Saturday. There are over 100 stallholders offering the most delectable local produce, fresh baked goods and an array of cafes to stop by for a mid-morning ‘pick me up’. They are open every Saturday from 7:30am-11am.

If you prefer more of an Arts and Crafts market, the Old Bus Depot Markets are where you need to head. Here you’ll find beautiful vintage items, handcrafted gifts, jewellery and unique items collected from around the globe. Visit every Sunday from 10am-4pm.

5. National Gallery of Australia – Explore your inner art and culture buff

With a collection of art from around the globe, carefully curated permanent and visiting exhibitions and newly imagined Australian and international galleries the National Gallery of Australia is a must visit for a little hit of culture. Be sure to check out ‘Skyspace’ a sculpture by James Turrell situated outside the Gallery, and don’t worry if you’re not a particular art buff, everyone is sure to find something that catches their eye.
