Woodford Folk Festival: An exciting event for natural and creative persuasions

Woodford Folk Festival

Held just one hour's drive north of Brisbane south of the Sunshine Coast, the Woodford Folk Festival is a must for creative types, music lovers, writers, naturalists and novelty enthusiasts alike. Like-minded individuals from all corners of the globe come together for this event in Brisbane, which is being held from 27 Dec to 1 Jan this year.

If you're looking for a family-friendly, art and culture-focused festival that also features some of the biggest names in folk and alternative music, this eclectic event should be right up your alley. Consider some of the highlights of the upcoming festival as you plan your trip.

Music

First and foremost, the Woodford Folk Festival will appeal to music lovers. The combination of acts that is due to headline the event this year includes some major names as well as a handful of up-and-comers.

This year, sit back and enjoy the tunes of Bertie Blackman, Fun Machine, Kate Miller-Heidke, Hiatus Kaiyote, Husky, Darren Middleton, Serendipity, Nahko and the Medicine for the People, Brass Knuckle Brass Band, Starboard Cannons, The Cairos and Lost boys. International acts will also be making their way to Oz for the festival: The Violent Femmes, Delhi 2 Dublin, DACHAMBO, Tiny Ruins, Jenn Grant and John Smith are just a few of the artists hailing from overseas.

Not only are the performances likely to be legendary, you really can't beat the venue. An open-air natural amphitheatre surrounded by tall trees will keep you feeling both connected with nature and totally in tune with the events unfolding on stage. And that's just one of your choices - the festival is also home to small-scale stages that seat just 35 people, making for an intimate concert-going experience.

Meditation

The Woodford Folk Festival isn't just for concerts, either - it's also a time to connect with your inner self and meet hundreds of like-minded people in pursuit of peace and spirituality.

Yogis, healers, and thought leaders in the realm of health and well-being will offer classes and lead seminars about meditation and other related subjects. Some of the experts who will be leading sessions and speaking at the festival include Andy Green, Master Rod Ferguson, Marie McNamara, Ian Cameron, Gwyn Williams and Djuelu the Village Scribe.

Stop by the Blue Lotus, housed in a shady grove next to a free-flowing creek, for some meditation, discussion forums, chanting and other experiences. At the Village Green - the festival's main gathering place - you can meet other families, enjoy a nap on the green grass, or simply gaze out over Clyde's Pond.

Learning

Explore a variety of subjects and discover new things by attending the plethora of talks and lectures that take place at the Woodford Folk Festival. From science and natural health to social justice and art, the range of topics covered at the festival will interest people from all walks and persuasions.

You can hear these lectures in a number of venues, including Blue Lotus, Coopers Bar, Bazaar and Folklorica.

Children's activities

The festival isn't just for the adults - the purveyors of the Woodford Folk Festival have designed an event that caters to children as well. Little ones will be treated to workshops and performances just for them, and can also partake in arts and crafts activities throughout the festival. This is no stuffy event, either - kids are welcome to run around the Village Green and use their outdoor voices to their hearts' content.

There are even a number of venues designed specifically for kids: Big Ideas, Big Paint, Circus Lair, Far Out, Mish Mash, Out There, Puppet Joint and Stardust Theatre.

Where to stay?

While you're enjoying the festival, you may want to book accommodation in Brisbane or the Sunshine Coast, both of which are about an hour's drive from the festival.
