Enjoy a Christmas treat with the Nutcracker

Celebrate Christmas with The Nutcracker

There are few things that capture the spirit of Christmas quite as beautifully as The Nutcracker, and the world-famous ballet is coming to help Sydneysiders (and visitors!) celebrate the festive season in style.

If you find yourself wondering what to do in Sydney this silly season, ponder no more. Head to the Joan Sutherland Theatre at the Sydney Opera House for the Australian Ballet's production of this internationally acclaimed story, complete with some of the most breathtakingly brilliant dancing you'll ever see.

The production is set to what has been described as Tchaikovsky's most charming score and follows the story of Clara, a ballet student who is enjoying Christmas Eve with her family at a party. A magician at the party gives young Clara a nutcracker doll, and as midnight arrives, the doll turns into a prince who takes Clara away to magical and enchanting lands. This is coupled with some of the most beautiful dancing and backdrops you can imagine, and the family-friendly nature of the show makes for the perfect pre-Christmas treat.

Watch the story move from the party's Edwardian home through to the fantastical Land of Snow as the prince takes Clara on an adventure of a lifetime. Kids will love the Land of Sweets and you'll be seriously impressed with the rapid, flawless transition between sets. It's as if the show really is magic.

Pay close attention to the Christmas tree and watch as it grows before your eyes with every scene, and enjoy the Sugar Plum Fairy stealing the show. The choreography was composed by the inimitable Peter Wright along with Lev Ivanoy and Vincent Redmon, with John F Macfarlane designing not only the visual spectacular of the set but also the characters' costumes.

This ballet has long been regarded as one of the world's favourites, with a real sense of magic weaved throughout the story. It was created in 1990 for Birmingham Royal Ballet and was first staged by the Australian Ballet in 2007 after hundreds of people worked for a whopping two years to bring it to life on stage. While the performance may look effortless on the night, a lot of blood sweat and tears goes into each and every performance. The Sugar Plum Fairy costumes alone require 10,000 handsewn beads - each!
