If you have yet to experience the magic that is The King and I, now is your chance. The incredible musical has won three Helpmann Awards, including Best Musical, and is now playing at the Sydney Opera House.

When you're in the area and are wondering what to do in Sydney, make sure this highly acclaimed show is at the top of your to-do list. This installment of the classic Rodgers and Hammerstein show features international opera singer Teddy Tahu Rhodes, and our very own Lisa McCune adding a touch of Australian glamour to the stage. It's won a Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle award for Best Musical Revival, so you know this show is going to be one amazing experience.

The King and I opened in 1996 and quickly swept the world, wrapping audiences up in its story of joy and love, complete with a truly unforgettable score that will be stuck in your head for days. Sing along to songs such as Shall We Dance, Something Wonderful and I Whistle a Happy Tune. The story, set in 1861, is based around the life of Anna Leonowens who is brought to tutor the King's children in the court of Siam. The young English widow brings with her her son, and the pair are unsure of what to expect from the Royal Palace. The woman tries to help the king get to grips with the modern world around him, but the Eastern man struggles to resist his ancient customs. The plot explores conflicting Eastern and Western cultures, expertly played out by the cast and crew.

It's the first time the Sydney Opera House has hosted the performance, which comes complete with dazzling costumes and sets that will leave you in awe. The play is not just a remake of the 1956 film of the same name, but an outstanding story and production in its own right. It first took to the stage in Adelaide in 1991, and has been enchanting audiences ever since.

Accompanying Tahu Rhodes and McCune is John Adam, who is a veteran of the Australian theatre scene. He plays Sir Edward Ramsay/Capt. Orton, after most recently appearing in the INXS documentary Never Tear Us Apart. Chinese folk singer Shu-Cheen Yu stars as Lady Thiang, having appeared on Chinese stages and television since she was a child. She arrived in Australia in 1987 and transferred her skills to our stages.

The musical runs from 7 September until 1 November at the Sydney Opera House's Joan Sutherland Theatre, There's even a captioned performance on Tuesday 21 October at 1pm.

Where to stay
