Take a weekend break to the Great Ocean Road

Victoria's Great Ocean Road is one of Australia's most iconic road tripping routes, full of awe-inspiring sights. With such breathtaking vistas and attractions to enjoy, there's nothing like checking this road out. With the weather starting to warm up, now's the perfect time to do it! This route is incredibly accessible and is a must-see phenomenon for anyone visiting the region. Here's just some of what you can get up to along the Great Ocean Road on a weekend break.

A weekend escape to the Great Ocean Road - Day one

Head out of the city when you finish work on Friday and settle in at a gorgeous seaside town along the Great Ocean Road route, such as Lorne, which has a gorgeous Mediterranean-inspired atmosphere. Torquay is another great option, particularly for adventurous couples who want to check out the surf. At Mantra Lorne you can enjoy a beautiful location, a resort room, a heritage hotel room or a one or two bedroom apartment.

Port Fairy is another charming option. This village is much like its name suggests, reminiscent of a fairytale for its quaint buildings and ambience.

Come Saturday morning, jump in your car and head out to one of the Great Ocean Road's most iconic attractions - the 12 Apostles. This natural wonder is approximately a four hour drive along the road. It features 12 windswept rock stacks that erupt from the ocean along the coast. They feature rugged cliffs, arches and caves formed by the constant lashing of the ocean and wind and are truly a sight to marvel at.

Walk some of the pathways and boardwalks that are there to enhance your viewing experience.

Next, stop in for lunch somewhere brimming with local fresh produce. If you're a fan of cheese, head to Cheeseworld just outside the town of Warrnambool. When it comes to the catch of the day, you can't go wrong with a delicious seafood meal from Port Fairy.

Once you've had your fill, continue on to another wondrous natural attraction, such as the Bay of Martyrs, which is the perfect place to take in the vistas of the Bay of Islands. Sunset is a great time to come here, when the stunning rocks are backlit by the sun and make for some awe-inspiring silhouettes.

Come nightfall, make your way to Melba Gully for a view of gorgeous, luminescent glow worms. Follow the walking track and take in the speckles of glowing light, making for an incredible evening out amongst nature.

Day two along the Great Ocean Road

On Sunday morning, you can experience even more of this region's natural wonder by heading to the Tower Hill State Game Reserve, which is home to a vast array of wildlife. The reserve is located inside an extinct volcano that takes back approximately 30,000 years, and offers up a variety of landscapes.

It's also home to animals such as emus, koalas, kangaroos and a number of bird species, such as chestnut teals, ducks and spoonbills. You can take the pathways and trails in the park and walk at your own leisure, or join a tour for a more in-depth understanding of the region, which includes information on the Aboriginal history of the area.

As the afternoon sets in, pack a picnic and make for the beautiful vistas of Bells Beach, which is famous for its surfing. This is found near the Torquay village, and is characterised by large swells forming incredible surf, and high cliffs that make the action out on the water all the more dramatic.

Nibble on more of the region's wonderful produce as you watch the surfers dart through the challenging waters. There are a number of great lookouts and viewing points for all the action, just remember to bring along a blanket as it can get windy.

With so much to do along the stunning Great Ocean Road, it's the perfect destination for a weekend escape.
