Football fans will be well and truly fired up for this year's Australian Football League (AFL) Finals Series, set to take the nation - and Melbourne in particular - by storm this September.

The Finals Series is the culmination of months of matches between the country's biggest and best premiership AFL teams, and consists four weeks of all the action, drama and sporting prowess you can dream of. After more than 100 home and away matches throughout the competition, this is your chance to see the eight best teams of the league battle it out for top honours.

"The Finals Series is the culmination of months of matches between the country's biggest and best premiership AFL teams, and consists four weeks of all the action, drama and sporting prowess you can dream of."

AFL teams battle it out from March to September each year to secure the title of champions, with 23 rounds of competition resulting in a field of the top eight teams qualifying for the final round of the year. It all kicks off on September 5-7, when qualifying and elimination finals get underway around the country. Week two will see the semi-finals take place, with the preliminaries on September 19 and 20. Finally, on September 27, the two best teams will meet at the world-famous Melbourne Cricket Ground for the Toyota AFL Grand Final.

It's expected almost 95,000 fans will pack out the stands of this prestigious venue for the grand final, and millions more will watch it live on television around Australia and the world. Melbourne will come alive with a carnival-like atmosphere, and even if you don't have tickets to the game itself you can still soak up the atmosphere at a bar nearby.
