How to trim your wardrobe when moving to another cityHow to trim down your wardrobe before a move

When you're moving to a new city, there's a lot to think about. Much of it comes down to the packing - choosing which items you need, how to get them to your destination and how you're going to store them.

One of the big elements you're going to have to think about is your clothing. We often have a lot more clothing than we necessarily wear, and when you're moving cities, it's often one of the first things you have to consider trimming down on.

Here are some tips on how to declutter your wardrobe and pack the essentials for your move.

Consider the elements

Which city are you moving to and what's the weather like? If you're living in Melbourne, for example, you'll need some rain and cold-hardy gears, but if you're moving up to Darwin your wardrobe is going to have to withstand the intense heat.

You might have to come to terms with that fact that some of your favourite items, whether it be your bulky winter coat or slinky summer dress, might not be appropriate for your destination.

"Make sure you have some basics covered before you leave. A plain black dress, skirt, and tops can be mixed and matched with other items, and a great pair of plain boots won't go astray, either.

Think about what you're there for

If you're moving to a new city primarily for business purposes, you might not need all your glad rags. Instead, you're probably going to want to rely on more of a corporate wardrobe. That doesn't mean you aren't going to have a social life necessitating some casual clothes - but don't fill up your entire suitcase with shorts and tees.
