Surf the waves with your family in Port Douglas. Riding the waves in Port Douglas.

Are you planning a family holiday to Port Douglas?

There are plenty of sights to see, but to really get the most out of this popular coastal town you can't go wrong with a bit of family surfing!

As with any water sport, it's important to make sure that safety is of top concern, so before you hit the waves you may want to schedule a few family surfing lessons to get everyone in top shape.

Here's a quick guide to getting surfing lessons for your family in Port Douglas.

What to expect

While the individual ins and outs of surfing lessons may vary between schools and teachers, there are a few common aspects.

Most surf schools will provide all the equipment you need for your learning session at a small hire fee, and some will even let you hire it out after the lesson so you can keep practising your skills and having fun.

You'll usually start off by learning a good paddle technique and how to catch small waves while still on the sand, before your instructor takes you out into safe water to practise your skills in the real environment.

Practice makes perfect, so your instructor will have you repeat techniques several times to ensure you get a good surfing foundation before you hit the bigger waves.

Kite surfing is a fun twist on the traditional sport of surfing, where the surfer uses a large power kite to harness the strength of the wind and propel themselves across the waves - a great idea for any adventurous family members!

Finding a surf school

National sport organisation Surfing Australia has a great list of surf schools in the whole Queensland area, so you can take your pick from the top instructors nearest you.

When you're choosing your family's surf school, make sure to check that the instructors employed by the school are all fully qualified and registered with the Surfing Queensland organisation, which offers the Coach Accreditation Course as part of the Australian Sports Commission’s National Coaching Accreditation Scheme (NCAS).

If you're staying at one of the Mantra holiday apartments, hotels or resorts in Port Douglas then you'll be pleased to see that you'll be nearby the excellent WindSwell kite surfing school, located at the south end of Four Mile Beach.
