There are many of us who would love to spend our holidays doing nothing more than relaxing by the beach with a cocktail in hand - but for others, no vacation would be complete without an action-packed adventure.

If you're always chasing that adrenaline rush, why not enjoy a weekend getaway in one of Australia's most popular adventure capitals?

Stretching from Mission Beach/Tully in the south to the northern and western reaches of Queensland, the Tropical North Queensland region spans Cairns, Port Douglas, the Daintree Rainforest, the Great Barrier Reef and many more exciting locations.

It goes without saying that Tropical North Queensland has plenty to offer for any adrenaline junkie, but here are just a few of the most popular activities you may want to try out on your next holiday.

Diving

If you're an avid diver, you can't beat the Great Barrier Reef and the surrounding smaller reefs and islands for an amazing underwater experience.

The Great Barrier Reef is the largest of its kind in the whole world, and it's home to an array of beautiful sea creatures such as dolphins, turtles, fish and whales.

Plenty of tour companies offer a variety of packages so you can experience the beauty of the reef for yourself - you can even combine a hot air balloon tour with a visit to the reef for an exciting day out.

For a location that's less well-known, you might want to check out the Agincourt Reef, near Port Douglas.

The Agincourt Reef is comprised of a series of smaller coral reefs with at least 16 different dive sites to choose from, with the Blue Wonder site offering a diving depth of over 40 metres for the truly adventurous.

Best of all, getting to the Agincourt Reef is easy if you're staying at one of Mantra's centrally located resorts in Port Douglas like Mantra Aqueous on Port.

Barron Gorge National Park

If you like to combine your thrill-seeking adventures with beautiful scenery, it's definitely worth planning a visit to the Barron Gorge National Park.

Featuring rugged, majestic mountains and deep ravines, a lush rainforest and dazzling waterfalls, the Barron Gorge is one of the most popular national parks in Australia.

It extends from the coastal lowlands towards the more elevated regions of the Atherton Tableland, and is home to many species of birds that are endemic to Queensland's Wet Tropics, such as the orange-footed scrubfowl.

The park also features a special Barron Falls lookout track, located 3.3 kilometres from Kuranda village, that takes you to a spectacular view of the falls.

White water rafting and other water sports

Get the adrenaline pumping with some exhilarating aquatic activities like white water rafting! Not only will you be doing a thrilling activity, you'll also get the chance to have a bonding experience like no other with your fellow rafters.

Depending on your level of ability, there are a number of different tour options you can try, whether you go for something aimed at beginners or an extreme, all-day grade four river adventure with numerous rapids to navigate.

The Tully River, Barron River and North Johnstone River are all popular options for white water rafters, and there are plenty of qualified tour companies and guides to choose from, so you'll be up to your ears in adrenaline in no time.

If you're up for it, many tour companies also offer the opportunity to try raft surfing, rapid swimming and rock jumping during the white water rafting experience, so this is definitely a chance to challenge yourself and get your heart racing!
