Australia's capital is gearing up to host its 18th annual film festival, showcasing some of the best short films from around the country and the world.

The three-day event has impressed crowds for almost two decades and is growing in popularity as it continues to bring together the best of the best in film, acting and storytelling.

Kicking off on Friday September 13, the Gala opening will launch the show at 6pm before a 7pm viewing plays some of the best films made right in Canberra.

Saturday September 14 will see the best of Australian comedy shown at 2pm, followed later by the best documentaries, then the best in Australian Drama at 7pm.

At 4pm on the final day of the festival (Sunday 15), the best international short films will get their moment in the spotlight before the finals and wrap up party at 6pm closes the event for another year.

It's a jam-packed weekend of short films and you'll need a good place to rest your head in between the festivities, so book your Canberra accommodation now.

Last year's winner of the Canberra Local Category, Simon Weaving, will be heading up the proceedings. His four years of art direction for the Canberra International Film Festival, as well as his experience as a filmmaker, reviewer and teacher place him in good stead for the role.

Tickets are already on sale and the program has been announced. Festival goers can expect to see work by upcoming artists and established directors alike. The hardest part will be deciding which shows to attend - if not all of them.

Each viewing has 6-12 short films so is well worth the ticket price, and every show will be followed by an announcement of the category winners. Although the big winner of the weekend, the film that gets to boast the title of 'Best Film', will not be announced until the closing show.

Local film veteran venue Dendy Cinemas will host the events in Canberra's central city.
