Give fishing at Port Douglas a try on your Queensland family holiday What will you catch on your Queensland fishing trip?

Fancy a spot of fishing on your family holiday in Queensland?

Port Douglas is famous for its fishing areas, so if you're keen to give the kids their first try, or are even just interested in a retreat with some friends, have a look at the great options for a trip away in this small port city.

So book in your accommodation with Mantra, perhaps at Mantra on the Inlet, or Mantra PortSea, get out your fishing gear, and hit the water for your next trip away.

River fishing

If you've never tried fishing on a river before, this could be a great time to give it a try.

Rivers in the area are the Daintree River, Muddy Creek, Dickson Inlet and Mowbray River.

Smaller boats are better for this calm water experience, which makes it easier for kids or first time anglers to get used to the gear and skills without worrying about a rocking boat.

Experienced fishermen will also love river fishing, and they can book a charter for lure and flyfishing, which will also let them go 'croc spotting', mud crabbing and bird watching.

Fish you can expect to catch include barramundi, queenfish, mangrove jack and trevally.

Reef fishing

The other major option for the Port Douglas fishing area is the chance to go reef fishing.

When you charter a boat, you'll travel around 15 - 25 nautical miles offshore to the reefs in a larger boat. Using handlines or rods, you can try your luck at bottom fishing for coral trout, red emperor, nannygai, trevally and mackerel.

This experience is better suited to anglers who have been fishing before or mature kids, and is best avoided by anyone who is especially susceptible to seasickness - unless the conditions are calm.
