Cairns is well-known for its beautiful diving opportunities, located close to the Great Barrier Reef!Three must-see family-friendly attractions in Cairns.

Cairns is a popular Queensland family holiday destination - and for good reason! Located in Tropical North Queensland, the city has a lovely tropical climate and is always buzzing with energy, as well as being close to the famous Great Barrier Reef.

If your family loves swimming and the outdoors but also wants to head to a city that is vibrant and alive, then this is a great place to visit.

There are many activities to choose from in Cairns, but here are three must-see attractions that will keep the whole family happy!

1. The Esplanade Lagoon

You can't go to Cairns without experiencing the city's famous Esplanade Lagoon.  Locals and tourists alike treat the 4,800sq metre saltwater lagoon like a beach, making the most of the cool water, beautiful views and warm climate.

The lagoon is built on reclaimed land and is right on the edge of Cairns' foreshore so you can enjoy swimming in a secure saltwater pool while looking out at the ocean.

This is a great place for families, as lifeguards are on duty from 6am to 9pm all year round - giving you peace of mind that your children can splash about in a safe environment.

Plan to spend a day at the lagoon and pack a picnic to enjoy under the surrounding shady trees. What a lovely, relaxing place for a holiday!

"A trip to the Great Barrier Reef is sure to be a memorable experience for your kids - no doubt they'll go home with memories that last forever!"

2. Muddy's Playground

Also located on the Esplanade, not far from the lagoon, Muddy's Playground is best-described as a water playground.

Among climbing frames, sculptures, slides and other play areas, there are manmade water pools and rivers - the kids are sure to make a splash!

There are also adventure play areas, featuring a flying fox, rope bridge, see-saw, track ride and more.

For the little ones, there are story-telling areas and puzzle games. No matter what your child is into, they will find something to keep them entertained!

3. The Great Barrier Reef

Cairns is lucky to be so close to Australia's famous Great Barrier Reef. This attraction brings in tourists from all around the world, and by staying in Cairns it is right on your doorstep!

There are many reef tours to choose from, so you are sure to find one that suits the whole family.

There's no need to get your feet wet if you don't want to - many of the boats that head out to the reef are kid-friendly and allow prams. You can take in the reef's beauty from the safety of the boat.

If your children are older, then you can find snorkelling tours suitable for little ones and see the beautiful sea life with your own eyes.

A trip to the Great Barrier Reef is sure to be a memorable experience for your kids - no doubt they'll go home with memories that last forever!
