Get set for the Launceston Cataract Challenge

Launceston Cataract Challenge

When one sporting challenge simply isn't enough, you may find yourself looking for athletic events that include many different disciplines into their timetables. The Launceston Cataract Challenge is one example of this, and it gets underway on Sunday 22 March.

Billing itself as 'Tasmania's most dynamic sporting event,' the challenge is perfectly suited to beginner competitors and elite athletes alike.

It packs in a whopping five sporting challenges, of which you can participate in as many as you wish. Enter as a team and enjoy bonding with your fellow competitors, or give yourself an added challenge by going it alone.

About the event

Formally known as the Launceston Eye Institute Cataract Gorge Challenge, this is the multi-sport event to end all multi-sport events. The five different legs makes this a step above traditional triathlon and other multi-sport events, and the stunning natural landscapes throughout the Gorge makes for a truly remarkable setting.

One of the best things about the Challenge is that it invites competitors new to sport and fitness to participate along with seasoned pros, encouraging people everywhere to be active and engaged in the community. Each leg has a different start time, meaning you can enter them all if you're feeling particularly sporty!

"Compete in one, a few or all five legs at the Launceston Eye Institute Cataract Gorge Challenge this March, or simply come along to watch the action."

The first challenge consists of a paddle around a flat water course, while the second is a road cycle out and back along the Gorge's stunning western side. Next up comes the run, which takes you in a circuit around the Gorge and Trevallyn Reserve. Make sure you've got appropriate shoes for this one, as there is a variety of terrain here and some steep inclines. Stage four is the mountain bike which loops through Trevallyn Reserve, followed by the ropes course strung above the Gorge's Suspension Bridge. Watch out for zip lines, traverses and cliff climbs in this thrilling event.

If that's not enough to get you excited, perhaps the prizes on offer can tempt you into competition. There are cash and product prizes for every challenge, with the overall winner taking home the coveted major prize. Even if you don't get a placing, you may find yourself receiving a random door prize - this goes for spectators, too!

Get involved

There are plenty of ways to get involved in the Cataract Gorge, even if you don't want to compete. Volunteer your time and help on the day to keep the event running smoothly, or simply come along and cheer on the competitors as they put their bodies on the line.
