Experience the Taste of Tasmania

Experience into the Taste of Tasmania

Australia is full of fabulous festivals and events during summer, and Taste of Tasmania is surely one of the best. The extravaganza of food takes place from Sunday 28 December 2014 through to Saturday 3 January 2015, and best of all, it offers free entry for the majority of the days.

The Hobart event is one of the most popular of its kind in Australia, and there's some fabulous resort accommodation nearby to make your holiday down south even more enjoyable. Mantra One Sandy Bay Road is ideal for anyone who wants to stay close to the heart of the CBD while still enjoying a charming, heritage-style building. The hotel was built in 1926 and has plenty of history for you to uncover, plus all the mod-cons to make your stay as comfortable as possible. Wander down to the Salamanca Market or Museum of Old and New Art, both of which are located just minutes away from your accommodation.

When the festival starts up, head outside the Mantra grounds to the Hobart waterfront - specifically, Princes Wharf No 1, Parliament House Lawns and Salamanca Lawns. You'll receive free entry to everything except for the famed New Year's Eve party, which is a ticketed event featuring live entertainment and midnight fireworks. Roving performs weave throughout the event, with locally produced wine, beer, cider and food providing plenty of reasons to get fully immersed in the frivolity. The big bash kicks off at Princes Wharf Shed No 1 at 7.00pm and finishes at 1.00am on New Year's Day, and is a family-friendly event. Kids 12 years and under can get free general entry when accompanied by a guardian.

Dine on decadent dishes such as adventurous wallaby burritos and possum cooked in duck fat through to more traditional - yet no less exceptional - fish and chips throughout the duration of the event. Stallholders present meals and snacks for you to enjoy throughout the festival, which attracts around 30,000 guests each year. Enjoy fresh Tasmanian seafood and dine out on Pernod-dressed oysters, ocean trout and even exotic-sounding salmon sausages. There are also plenty of sweet offerings to indulge in - after all, it's the holiday season and that means it's time to treat yourself!

Indulge in a Taste Food Tour, which are conducted by guides to show a selection of the various stallholders throughout the festival. Themed tours may include talks with various food producers at the stalls, along with tasting platters for you to fuel your food frenzy. You can even enjoy food and wine pairing sessions, giving you the chance to sample a collection of the region's delicious wines.

It's not all about the food at Taste of Tasmania - the region's superior cool-climate wine, cider, craft beer and peat-distilled whiskey will all be on display as well. Taste your way around the stalls, which are manned by everyone from boutique brewers through to large-scale distilleries. Take the kids to scheduled children's activities such as demonstrations on growing and cooking vegetables, and enjoy family-friendly movies as twilight nears. The warm weather at this time of year lends itself perfectly to the outdoor festival, but make sure you bring sunhats and sunscreen to keep safe in the elements!

The accessible event aims offers wheelchair access, a range of seating options and accessible parking, making it an ideal festival for people of all ages and abilities. Different days of the festival have different start and end times, with food and drinks services ending 15 minutes before closing.
