Moving to Brisbane? Explore the city on a budget

If you're moving to a new city it can eat up a lot of your savings, and it's natural to feel a bit low on money when you finally arrive at your destination. Unfortunately, this is a time when you are most likely to want to get out and about to discover your new surroundings, and without much cash to splash, it can seem difficult to maximise this exciting new experience.

If you're about to make the move towards living in Brisbane or are planning to visit the city and are looking for things to do that are free, don't panic if your bank account doesn't quite live up to your enthusiasm as there is plenty you can do without spending too much. Take a look at these tips for the best ways to explore Brisbane on a budget.

Hit the markets

Local markets are great places to not only absorb some of a city's culture, but also stock up on fresh produce, baked goods, meat and trinkets to deck out your new place. Try the West End Davies Park Markets on Saturdays from 6:00 am until 2:00 pm. The weekly event is community-driven and features live music, healthy fast food, fashion, gifts and produce all set amongst beautiful fig trees.

Pick up your fruit and veges for the week and get change from a $20 note, knowing that you're supporting the area's farmers and growers. While you're at it, pick up gourmet sausages and fresh seafood to complete your week's menu. Sip on some freshly ground and brewed coffee while you take in the hustle and bustle of the stallholders and shoppers.

Get a Greeter

Want to get insider tips without spending a dime? Get in touch with a Brisbane Greeter. This is a free public service open to anyone, whether you're a local, tourist or you're just getting settled into your new home. Greeters are locals who are passionate about Brisbane, and are eager to pass on their insider knowledge to you. They're located in the city, Parklands, Botanic Gardens and Riverside, and you can choose from 'Your Choice' or 'Greeter's Choice' options.

On the Greeter's Choice trip, the guide takes you on a journey of interesting areas in the city, as chosen by them. At least three days' notice is required for this option, with tours departing at 10:00 am every day from outside Brisbane City Hall.

A Your Choice Greet must be booked at least a week in advance, with the experience tailored to your specific interests. This tour runs between two and four hours, with both morning and afternoon time slots available. There are more than 150 Greeters available and between them they speak more than 25 different languages.

Laugh for free

The Brisbane Powerhouse hosts plenty of free activities, with Friday's Knockoff event particularly appealing. The free event will have you starting you weekend off the right way, with a variety of local comedians and those from further afield taking the stage to tell jokes, one-liners, punchlines, and stories. If you luck into the performance on the last Friday of the month, you'll catch Brisbane's own Impro Mafia.

The hour-long show kicks off at 6:00 pm, giving you plenty of time to head there after work with a few friends and unwind with a beer or two.

If you're in the Powerhouse area on a Sunday, you'll be treated to some superb live music with Livespark - all for free. The mid-afternoon show presents indie-pop and rock bands from Brisbane and beyond, with a double billing that has the first act starting at 3:30 pm and the second at 4:30 pm.
