Don't let the cooler days and longer nights of winter get you down - spring is just around the corner and it's going to be bursting with colour and fun. That's particularly true for the nation's capital, with Canberra set to burst with all things bold and bright in September with the much-loved Floriade festival.

What's this iconic event? Well, it's been running for 27 years and bringing a whole host of delight to the city with around one million flowers blooming through Canberra's Commonwealth Park. Entry is free, so you can enjoy everything on offer without spending a cent. Join the some 400,000 visitors who traverse from across Australia and the world to enjoy the various wonders on offer.

In addition to this, the daytime festivities of Floriade will be complemented by Floriade NightFest, which features a program of events including live music, comedy, markets and loads of other exciting entertainment.

Head along to the city between September 13 and October 12, and visit the Commonwealth Park between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. between Monday and Friday, and 9 a.m. and 5.30 p.m. on weekends.

Look forward to wandering around four hectares of eye-catching parklands, with a 1.6km circuit walk on offer showcasing the floral highlights. Don't miss features such as the Inspiration Hub, which will be home to special guests, celebrity appearances and demonstrations, all taking inspiration from this year's theme of 'Passion'.

Here you'll get the chance to learn about everything from ecological gardening to techniques of the future. Take in the various intricate floral displays showcased throughout the garden and get plenty of inspiration for your own backyard.

There's also the Gourmet Garden, where world-renowned chefs will demonstrate their finesse and teach you a few tricks of the trade.

Bring the whole family along for a ride on the 35 metre-high Ferris wheel, which provides breathtaking views of the park simply bursting with all the shades of the rainbow.

That's not all the kids will enjoy. There's also the Circus Playground, where kids and their families can learn fun circus techniques such as juggling, balancing on stilts and walking across beams safely.

Matilda's Farmyard Nursery is another crowd pleaser, home to cute farm animals that kids just love snuggling up next to. Reptiles Inc, on the other hand, will showcase some of Australia's most interesting non-venomous reptiles and amphibians, such as lizards, snakes and turtles.

Stick around for Floriade NightFest's entertainment too, which will run between September 24 until September 28. Head along between 6.30pm and 10.30 p.m. and see stunning and creative lighting displays across the garden beds, ponds and trees in the park. In addition to this, there will be stunning lighting shows, music, entertainment and lots of goodies on offer at the markets to help keep you fed and watered.
