Thinking about moving to a new city for a job? Here's what to consider.Things to consider when moving cities for a job

If you've been offered a job in a new city, there's undoubtedly a lot to think about and consider before you make the big move.

After all, moving across the country can present a few obstacles and challenges - but nothing that can't be overcome with a bit of planning and thought.

Here are some tips to guide you through the process and hopefully make it an easier one.

Think about the big picture and do your research

Before you commit to a move, make sure it's really what you want and the best decision for you. Rather than making a knee-jerk decision and accepting an offer straight away, take some time to think about the offer.

There are a lot of elements to think about, from the expenses of moving and a new city's cost of living to proximity to family and friends and of course how much you will be paid and if the move will help to advance your career.

Make sure you look into your potential new city and do research into important features such as long term accommodation, cost and any facilities or amenities you require. From the level of public transport available to the kinds of shops and restaurants on offer, the more you know, the better informed your choice will be.

Once you've carefully thought through these aspects and weighed up the pros and cons, you can come to a final decision.

Plan carefully in the weeks and months leading up to the move

Ideally, if you decide to accept a job and move cities, you won't have to start straight away and will have some time to plan the finer details of your move.

Take time to tie up loose ends, such as giving notice to your current job and landlord and catching up with family and friends before you go.

You'll need to put some time into planning how your move is going to go practically, too. From deciding which clothes to pack and what furniture, if any, you're going to get shipped over, to informing your bank and insurance providers, the little tasks can add up.

Write a comprehensive list so you don't forget any of the finer points, and check each off as you go. The more organisation and forward-planning you can engage in before you make the big move, the better.

This will become particularly important as you begin your new job, which may take up significant time and energy as you first get settled in. You don't want to be distracted by other menial tasks as you start your new important chapter.

Don't forget the fun

It's easy to get caught up in the stress of moving, but don't forget this is also a very fun and exciting time! From meeting new people and making friends to discovering great restaurants, bars and other attractions, there's so much to enjoy about moving to a new place.

Ensure you set aside ample time to explore your new neighbourhood and enjoy what it has to offer. Ask friends or workmates to recommend places to go and things to do, or search on the internet for some of the top spots.

While there will undoubtedly be some challenges to face as you settle in, it will also be an incredible adventure that will leave you with a great sense of accomplishment. Plan as best you can when it comes to the big and important elements of moving, but don't be afraid to try new things and take a few chances - you never know where it might lead!
