As the school holidays begin it's essential to have a list of activities to keep kids entertained, rain or shine!

To help you plan your days, here are some ideas for some child-friendly fun, whether at home or out and about in a different city altogether.

Family fun at home

Do you need to while away some days at home these holidays? Think about heading into the garden. The kids will love getting involved, whether it's helping to make a vegetable patch or planting some seasonal flowers. It also helps the whole family to get active.

"Whether you're in your home city or have travelled to another destination for a holiday escape, there are plenty of things to keep you and the family busy."

Don't be afraid to get kids involved in the kitchen, either. Perhaps you can use some of your vegetable garden creations to make a nutritious pizza or salad.

Even a simple activity, such as a picnic in your very own backyard, can be a great way to spend a couple of hours. Preparing food into baskets, laying out a blanket and running around in the garden can provide plenty of fun for all ages.

Crafts are always a fantastic way to pass the time with kids, too. Making masks, fairy wings, flower presses, sock puppets or even going on a treasure hunt are classic family favourites!

Make sure you've got a stack of board games stashed away for a rainy day, too. Classic games such as Jenga and Monopoly are always crowd-pleasers.

Out and about: At home or away

Whether you're in your home city or have travelled to another destination for a holiday escape, there are plenty of things to keep you and the family busy.

Look up the museums nearby and see what's on for kids. The Australian Museum in Sydney, for example, can keep kids occupied for hours with its dinosaur bones and interactive activities. There are plenty of school holiday programs taking place during April too, such as craft-making, baking classes and 'Professor Flint's T. rex Adventure' song and dance extravaganza.

Museums all around Australia have similar activities on for kids during the Easter break, so be sure to take advantage of the both fun and educational opportunities.

The zoo is another family favourite and many zoos around the country also have great activities for kids. Take Melbourne Zoo, for example. During April it will hold a 'Kids Go Wild' program, where children get to go behind-the-scenes of the zoo, meet and greet animals and learn all about what goes on day-to-day from zoo keepers. Check out zoos around Australia for the fantastic experiences on offer, from daily animal encounters to 'Keeper for a Day' opportunities, where kids get to shadow a zoo keeper for a day, helping them with their tasks.

Or how about heading out on a hike? From a wander around the Three Sisters at the Blue Mountains to a leisurely stroll along one of north Queensland's beaches, there's no shortage of beauty scenery for the family to enjoy together.

You might even decide to take a road trip, traversing along the Great Ocean Road or the Rainforest Way that crosses both New South Wales and Queensland. Stop off at country towns and fresh farmers' markets as you make your way through the countryside. Just remember to bring along plenty for the kids to do in the car - from singalong songs to soft toys and an iPad with assorted games.

If you do plan on heading away, be sure to book your holiday accommodation. That way you can sit relax knowing you and the family have somewhere wonderful to rest your heads when you reach your destination - before you head out exploring, of course!
