Building sandcastles is a treasured past time and long-held summer tradition for many families. While most of us create humble structures, those who call themselves professional sand sculptors create works of art to be admired!

This year Surfers Paradise will host the Australian Sand Sculpting Championships. Taking place between February 14 and March 2, this exciting competition will bring together ten professional sculptors. It's the third year of the event, which will involve 180 tonnes of sand being moulded into the artists' interpretation of the theme 'Myths, Legends and Fairy Tales'.

While the professionals are at work, families can enjoy the surrounding activities including sand sculpting workshops and sand bottle making. You can also vote for your favourite sculpture in the People's Choice Awards.

From 20-23 February, the main event will be happening on the beachfront of Surfers Paradise, the Australia Against the World competition, where national pride is at stake as two teams compete to sculpt the best piece.

When it comes to Surfers Paradise, there are plenty of options for holiday accommodation. Whether you are looking for a hotel room, or a one, two or three bedroom apartment, there's a room to suit you.

Mantra Legends Hotel and Mantra Crown Towers are just 100 metres from Surfers Paradise beach, which is great if you want to keep close to the sand sculpting action.

If you’d like to stay even closer to the water you can't go past the Paradise Centre Apartments, just 20 metres from the beach. These one, two and three bedroom apartments have stunning views and great facilities such as a pool, spa, and tennis court.
