If you've just taken up long term accommodation in Perth or have a holiday planned there this summer, you may want to consider ways to stay cool during the notoriously sweltering months of December, January and February.

Live like a local and follow these tips to beat the heat in Perth.

Air conditioning

Perth temperatures over summer usually average around 30 degrees, but can creep up much higher than that. One way to avoid overheating is by staying somewhere with air-conditioning.

Choose long term accommodation like Mantra on Hay, which has rooms equipped with individually-controlled air conditioning units.

Exercise at night or in the morning

Hot weather shouldn't be an excuse to give up your carefully crafted fitness regime. All it takes is a bit of planning. Consider shifting your afternoon run to early morning or later in the day when the temperature is cooler and there's less risk of sunburn. You'll have the added bonus of seeing the sun rise or set if you time it right!

Consider mixing up your routine to include water sports such as swimming, surfing or paddle boarding. This will help you cool down while you work out. Perth has some stunning beaches such as Cottesloe, Scarborough and City Beach, so you'll be spoilt for choice for exercise locations.

Watch your fluid intake

It can be tempting to while away the sunny hours with a refreshing brew or two, but it's important to ensure you're getting as much water as you need to avoid dehydration and sunstroke.

Perth does have some fantastic bars, such as The Aviary, Ezra Pound Bar and Clarences, where you can head for a crisp cider or wine as you watch the sun go down, but don't forget to stock up on non alcoholic beverages to keep looking after your body.
