Queensland is a great place to embark on a road trip. Whether you want to head to the sandy white beaches and impressive shopping malls of the Gold Coast or visit the beautiful rainforests and wildlife habitats in the tropical north, Queensland has something special to offer in every corner.

Most of the roads are also a pleasure to drive, such as the famous Great Tropical Drive, which takes you through Port Douglas, Cairns, Townsville and surrounding rainforests and national parks.

With attractions like these to explore, it'll be easy to keep the kids happy in the backseat!

However, to make your drive even more comfortable we have come up with five road trip essentials for your Queensland family holiday. Be sure to add these five things to your boot before you hit the open road.

1. Chocolate macadamias and Tim Tams

Would a road trip be complete without a good supply of chocolate? Add a patriotic twist to your drive by packing away some tasty Australian sweet snacks. Tim Tams are always a family favourite, while macadamias coated in dark chocolate are not far behind.

Bring these out when the kids start to feel a bit restless. You could even use them as prizes for car games like I Spy or for spotting landmarks and signs.

If some people prefer savoury snacks, then continue with the Aussie theme and bring along some fresh vegemite sandwiches or a bag of crunchy Cheezels.

"If you have young children, then pack a few albums that they love - this could be your saviour on long car trips, even if the Wiggles aren't your 'music' of choice!"

2. Music

Nothing sets the mood for a road trip like some good music. It's time to strap in and sing along to all of your favourite crooners.

Load up the iPod with the latest top 40 tracks, or stick to an Australian theme and make a play list featuring the nation's homegrown heroes. Kylie Minogue anyone?

If you have young children, then pack a few albums that they love - this could be your saviour on long car trips, even if the Wiggles aren't your 'music' of choice!

3. Games

Gone are the days when 'I Spy' and 'Who Am I?' were the only car games in town. You can now pick up all sorts of electronic devices that will keep the kids happy for hours on end!

Most toy stores also stock travel card games and other trivia games, such as general knowledge quizzes.

Have a browse around your local store before you head off and be sure to pack away enough games to entertain the kids.

4. Camera

Family holidays are a great opportunity to make memories. Don’t forget to have your camera handy on your road trip - you never know when you'll want to pull over for a family photo or snap a cheeky picture of the kids as they sleep in the backseat.

5. GPS or smartphone

When exploring a new area, it's handy to have a GPS or a smartphone with a mapping app. This can help you navigate Queensland with ease!

Some smartphone apps will also be able to identify nearby gas stations, food stops and other rest stops, allowing you to better plan your journey.

Not to mention it's always important to have a phone with you when heading out of state, just in case you run into any trouble.

Hopefully these five essentials will help you enjoy your road trip - no matter where you are heading, be sure to book in at one of the many Mantra hotels, resorts and apartments across Queensland.
