Lovers of arts and culture throughout Melbourne, brace yourselves. You're about to experience a month-long extravaganza of opera, exhibitions and films as part of the 2013 Melbourne Ring Festival.

This year marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of German composer Richard Wagner. The Melbourne Ring Cycle will be celebrating this during November and December, with three complete cycles of his four powerful operas performed throughout the month.

The Cycle is presented by Opera Australia, in collaboration with the Victorian Government.

The festival will feature public talks, installations and multimedia screenings for the whole family to enjoy. If you're treating your loved ones to a weekend getaway and are wondering what to do in Melbourne, this is the event for you.

Federation Square will come alive on November 16 for the Ride of the Valkyries, signifying the arrival of Wagner's Ring cycle to Melbourne. There will be an official City of Melbourne welcome with a mass of brass bands taking the stage to celebrate the event. The Valkyries themselves will arrive on horseback, which will surely delight audiences young and old.

This, like many other events throughout the festival, is free for audiences.

After a big day of enjoying the festivities, you can head down to Arts Centre Melbourne's Festspielhaus for relaxation, rejuvenation, chit chat and a few drinks to celebrate. You'll be entertained by free live music, singing, circus performances and much more.

If you're looking for holiday accommodation while you're in the city, check out Mantra on Russell for contemporary apartment and studio suites. You'll have your own kitchen facilities and most likely a balcony from which to enjoy the city sights, making it the perfect home away from home for you and your family.
