Tropfest is one of the most popular events in Sydney and a unique opportunity to experience the best of the Australian film industry - so make sure you're there on December 8 to secure your spot at the park!

"Not only that, Tropfest has also expanded to other countries around the world with events held in South East Asia, New Zealand, America, Arabia, Israel, China, India and Paris.

The history of Tropfest

From its humble beginnings as an informal short film screening held at the Tropicana Cafe in Darlinghurst, Tropfest has grown to become one of the biggest short film festivals in the world and this year marks its 22nd outing.

The main festival has stayed in Sydney, but now the event attracts around 150,000 people all around the country and a live satellite feed links the Sydney crowd with those in Melbourne, Canberra, Perth, Brisbane, Hobart, Adelaide and Surfers Paradise.

Not only that, Tropfest has also expanded to other countries around the world with events held in South East Asia, New Zealand, America, Arabia, Israel, China, India and Paris.

All about the festival

The competition is open to everyone, and around 700 films are typically entered each year. From this pool, only 16 finalists are selected.

These finalists will go on to compete for prizes worth over $100,000. During the night of the festival, the winner will be selected live by a panel of judges including representatives from the industry.

Nicole Kidman, Cate Blanchett, Naomi Watts and many more of Australia's biggest film stars have previously participated in Tropfest, so you never know who you'll catch at the festival!
